A quantitative indicator of the change in the shape of red blood cells during storage, a morphology score, was devised and this morphology score was used as a general indicator of the in vitro condition of the cells .

Morphologic change and morphology score of red cell were tested on each samle.
Red cell shape was changed from discoid shape, through a echinocyte stage to the final spheroidal stage during storage. Echinocyte-Ⅰ was observed at collection day and Echinocyte-Ⅱ was observed at 7 days after storage. Spherocytes were appeared
at 28
days after storage.
Morpholog scores of red cell at day 7, day 21 and day 35 after storage in CPDA-1 revealed 91.8%, 74.3% and 62.3% of the initial value respectively.
